Fall Fashion Trends we’re getting behind — Millennial Edition
By your fave Millennial Working Girl 💋
Wyo here! You might have seen me make a few appearances on our Instagram feed, but if we haven't formally been introduced, Hi! I’m Wyo, best known as WGB’s resident Type-A Millennial and lowkey Consummate Consumer. What can I say, I LOVE STUFF! All kinds of stuff, I really don’t discriminate.
I recently saw a TikTok (yes, I love to creep and doom scroll TikTok to make me feel like I’m still in the know) and had a good chuckle at something that I’m sure my fellow Millennials might also find funny. Do you remember when faux-fur vests, wet leggings and cuffed blazers were a staple in all our closets? Do you still have these pieces in your closet? Are any of you thinking what I’m thinking? What’s in now?
I took the liberty of scouring the interwebs (TikTok, Instagram and my own notes from some recent buying trips) and here are some of my favourite trends and finds for apparel and handbags, of course.
FALL COLOURS: CHOCOLATE BROWN, MAROON & CHEETAH PRINT
Remember when we were all convinced that mustard yellow was a “neutral”? Yeah… that era has passed. This fall, it’s all about chocolate brown, maroon, and — plot twist — cheetah print. Brown is giving us Starbucks PSL core but in a sexy, grown-up way. Maroon? She’s the moody older sister who went to Europe for a semester abroad and now only drinks red wine. And cheetah print? Okay, hear me out: it’s back, but not in that Forever 21 bodycon way. It’s more “cool mom in the drop-off line with a Goyard tote” energy. Pair it smartly and you’ll look like you’ve got your life together (even if your laundry pile is telling a different story).
MODERN PREP
Do you remember cuffing your blazer sleeves so the striped lining showed? Same. Modern prep is like that — but now with therapy and better tailoring. Think: pleated skirts but longer, loafers but chunkier, blazers but intentionally oversized instead of “oops, I borrowed this from my ex.” It’s Gossip Girl reloaded, minus the headbands and questionable tights. And honestly? This is my personal style sweet spot. I live for a crisp shirt half-tucked into good denim with a structured blazer thrown over the top — it’s polished but still chill. If you ever spot me out and about, there’s about a 90% chance I’m in some variation of this. And yes, you can carry a giant tote and pretend it’s full of law school books, when in reality it’s just holding your emotional support water bottle and 3 lip balms.
COUNTRY-CODED
Okay, don’t panic. I’m not telling you to pull out the cowboy boots you panic-bought for Stagecoach. This fall’s “country-coded” moment is giving chic ranch retreat, not mechanical bull at a bachelorette. Think denim-on-denim (Canadian tuxedo but make it chic), suede accents, buttery leather, and the kind of belt buckle that makes you feel like you have land in Montana (even if your condo board won’t let you have a BBQ). A hobo or slouchy leather bag completes the look, because nothing says “casual sophistication” like pretending you know how to lasso.
HOBO BAGS OF ALL SIZES
Millennials, rejoice: the hobo bag is back, and she’s better than ever. If you were in your Olsen twins phase circa 2007, you already know the power of a bag that could double as a carry-on. This season though, it’s not just about oversized — there are cute, compact hobos too (basically their Gen Z offspring). They’re slouchy, easy, and give off that effortless “I totally didn’t just stuff an entire CVS receipt in here” vibe. Honestly, they’re the emotional support bag we all deserve.
THE VANITY HANDBAG
The micro bag trend has been trying to starve us for years, but vanity cases are here to save the day. Structured, boxy, and big enough to fit more than a single AirPod, these little top-handle numbers are giving retro glam. They feel a little bit “grandma’s powder case,” a little bit “old Hollywood starlet running late to brunch.” Plus, they let us feel polished without reliving the trauma of Juicy Couture velour purses. If you’ve been waiting for a grown-up, millennial-friendly statement bag moment — this is it.
So there you have it — a little peek into what’s catching my eye (and clogging my camera roll) this fall. I know the internet can make it feel like you have to reinvent your entire closet every season, but honestly? Most of these trends are just grown-up, slightly more self-aware versions of the things we already loved in our Abercrombie and H&M Divided era. That’s the beauty of being a millennial in 2025 — we’ve lived through the peplum tops, the bubble necklaces, the ballet flats with no support… and we’ve come out the other side stylish and self-aware. I’ll keep doing the doom-scrolling, the try-ons, and the market trips so you don’t have to — and I’ll report back with what’s actually worth your time (and your tote bag real estate). Here’s to looking cute, feeling like ourselves, and never, ever bringing back the bandage skirt. 💋
Want to keep the conversation going? Come hang out with me and all our other WGB Girlies in our Instagram group chat Closet Talk — it’s where we share our hot takes, fashion confessions, and what we’re actually buying this season. I’ll see you there!
xoxo,
Wyo from WGB
